GENERAL DESCRIPTION

 

The teacher is the primary instructional delivery person in the classroom. Student achievement and growth are primarily dependent on the work and efforts of the teacher. The teacher will provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular band activities and ensure compliance with all state and district requirements; will plan activities to achieve district, region, and state recognition.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Must have a collegiate or postgraduate professional license or be eligible for a provisional license in music, Master’s Degree preferred.
  2. Teaching experience or its equivalency preferred.
  3. Two years band instruction experience preferred.

 

ESSENTIAL SKILLS, DUTIES AND ABILITIES

  1. Develop students’ technique for playing brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments and cover appropriate band literature styles for school and competitive performances.
  2. Design and implement a wide variety of appropriate instructional activities for students of varying abilities and talents.
  3. Evaluate student achievement and adjust instruction accordingly.
  4. Teach a variety of vastly different skills on different instruments simultaneously.
  5. Organize and maintain a large inventory of equipment.
  6. Organize and maintain a large inventory of instructional materials and music library.
  7. Plan and organize concerts and other public performances.
  8. Prepare and produce concert programs.
  9. Organize and supervise large groups of students.
  10. Be responsible for budgeted and fundraised money accounts.
  11. Manage fundraising for music program.
  12. Maintain appropriate licenses as required.
  13. Comply with applicable District, state, local and federal laws, rules and regulations.
  14. Adhere to all teacher standards of ethics as established by the Virginia Department of Education.
  15. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

This job operates in a professional, school environment. This role routinely uses standard equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate clearly. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, reach, and sit for extended periods of time.
