GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This position is responsible for providing science education services to high school students in a classroom and laboratory setting. Instructs students, maintains student discipline and is responsible for student academic achievement.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  1. Bachelor's Degree in applicable field from an accredited college or university with required endorsements.
  2. Master’s Degree preferred.
  3. Must have or be eligible for a teacher license from the Virginia Department of Education with an endorsement in chemistry.
  4. Teaching experience at the secondary level (9-12) preferred.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Follows and maintains knowledge of all District policies and procedures.
  2. Develops and maintains a classroom environment conducive to effective learning.
  3. Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students.
  4. Assists in the selection of books, equipment, lab supplies and other instructional materials.
  5. Instructs students and assigns relevant activities which demonstrate active student engagement.
  6. Grades papers, assignments, labs and assessments promptly and accurately; inputs grades in accordance to all deadlines.
  7. Prepares and administers subject/topical specific tests and labs to measure student abilities and progress.
  8. Prepares report cards and progress reports (PowerSchool) per deadlines and protocols given.
  9. Facilitates conferences with students and parents.
  10. Completes required paperwork in specified time and manner.
  11. Designs and implements appropriate instruction of curriculum assigned in accordance with students' needs, District curriculum, and state standards.
  12. Prepares, sets-up and cleans-up science lab activities.
  13. Establishes and enforces safety protocols to prevent student and personal injury.
  14. Conducts appropriate assessments of students' work and maintains accurate and regular data on students in areas of attendance, grades and IEP progress, if applicable.
  15. Supervises students in hallways before, after and between classes, and as assigned.
  16. Works to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning the academic and behavioral progress of their students through conferences, written messages, telephone calls and/or e-mail.
  17. Promptly reports any serious accident or illness affecting students in the teacher's charge or any incident which might affect the school, teachers or students therein.
  18. Uses a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  19. Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and maintains such records as required by law and by District policy.
  20. As previously listed, takes all responsible precautions to provide for health and safety of the students and to protect equipment, materials and facilities.
  21. Appropriately maintains and secures confidential records and inquiries.
  22. Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required.
  23. Collaborates with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, curriculum and instructional methods.
  24. Professionally represents the school and the District in interactions with parents, community, staff and students.
  25. Complies with applicable District, state, local and federal laws, rules and regulations.
  26. Attends work regularly and is punctual.
  27. Other duties and responsibilities as determined by the principal.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

The candidate will demonstrate knowledge of the necessary principles and application of theory into practice for effective instruction and positive behavioral supports that are beneficial for implementation with all students. The educator also demonstrates the ability to provide positive behavioral support to students in a group and in an individual setting; demonstrates an understanding of the various learning styles and models instruction to address student needs. Designs assessments that provide accurate and usable data to support on-going student achievement.  Utilizes current modes of technology to support curriculum and models effective use of a variety of manipulatives/models to support student engagement and comprehension. Demonstrates the ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office and school based staff, students, parents and community members.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Duties performed typically in a school setting. Performs professional work providing instruction for the assigned subject. Work requires prolonged standing and physical movement as it relates job-specific duties. Light lifting of up to 10 pounds may be required. Vocal communication for expressing or exchanging ideas, hearing to perceive information at a normal spoken word level and visual acuity for preparing and analyzing written or computer data are required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential tasks.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 10-month contract (200 days)
