Substitutes
At King William County Public Schools, our teachers have a profound impact on students’ lives. When they have planned or unplanned absences, we rely on skilled substitutes to fill in. We are currently looking for engaging, reliable substitute teachers to cover classes at all levels, from pre-kindergarten to high school. In this position, you will take over for full-time teachers in their absence, carrying out their lesson plans and ensuring students have a fulfilling classroom experience. The ideal candidates will have prior substitute-teaching experience and the ability to provide instruction and classroom management.
Essential Job Functions of a Substitute Teacher
Assumes all duties and responsibilities of the absent teacher.
Develops and maintains a positive learning environment.
Follows the teacher’s written lesson plans. Consults with the principal and/or staff to resolve questions and/or concerns.
Implements effective pupil management procedures. Maintains high standards and upholds the student conduct code. Intervenes and/or reports concerns to an administrator.
Complies with all building procedures and schedules. Promotes the proper use and care of school property.
Takes precautions to ensure staff/student safety. Does not leave students unsupervised.
Performs other specific job-related duties as directed by the district.
Requirements of Substitute Teacher
- Complete an online application
- Provide a high school diploma or GED
- While not required, if the applicant has least 60 degree credits, please provide a copy of the transcripts for our records. Also, this information will help determine your pay scale based on the degree and non- degree requirements.
- Provide two reference letters.
*Once substitutes are approved, we will use the online substitute placement system, FRONTLINE, to get you signed in and signed up to view absences and pick up daily jobs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Physical agility to lift up to 30 pounds; to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment. Duties may be performed outside and on field trips away from school. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and the employee may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens.
