DESCRIPTION
The English Learner (EL) teacher monitors and supports the entire well-being of the EL student, as well as provides support to parents/guardians of EL students as they engage in the school community. This position is responsible for providing English language development instruction to grades K-12 students who do not have proficiency in the four domains: listening, speaking, reading, and/or writing. The EL teacher will plan and implement a learning plan that develops competencies, knowledge, and skills for each student in the English Language Development Program.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in English as a Second Language and/or meet the Virginia Department of Education licensure eligibility requirements.
- Must be eligible or possess Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Postgraduate Professional License with appropriate endorsement to teach English as a Second Language.
- Must possess ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.

Contract: 11 months
Salary Scale: Teacher

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Utilizes the WIDA ELD standards and framework to develop curriculum and other appropriate learning activities for all students, based on their English language proficiency levels.
- Develops lesson plans, supplementary materials, and appropriate learning activities that are compatible with core courses, when possible.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
- Provides individual, small group, or whole group instruction to meet the required number of service minutes required by the school division.
- Provides support to the mainstream teacher in lesson planning and modifications for EL students.
- Monitors and evaluates the academic and social growth of all EL students, reviews interim and report card grades and attendance, collaborating frequently with teachers, school building administration, and school counselors surrounding students’ academic, behavioral, or social concerns.
- Monitors previous English Learners’ academic performance.
- Communicates regularly with parents about student progress. Serves as liaison between the school and the parents/guardians of the EL students.
- Participates in faculty meetings.
- Coordinates school special events which support EL students and families.
- Attends school events which occur during the school day and in the evening to help support EL students and families (i.e. Reading Night, Math Night, etc.).
- Administers screening and Access for ELLs testing in accordance with state and division testing requirements.
- Monitors division-wide activities and programs and encourages EL students to take advantage of all school opportunities.
- Provides professional development to staff on best practices and the WIDA ELD standards and framework.
- Supports registration and admission of new EL students.
- Translates school documents as necessary.
- Creates a daily/weekly schedule to provide service minutes for all students.
- Writes student support plans and helps coordinate the meeting schedule.
Skillsets and Characteristics of a Successful Candidate:
- Able to prioritize and complete multiple, simultaneous tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Able to work with students in grades K-12 and engage in age-appropriate instructional practices.
- Must be vigilant in monitoring student needs.
- Must be extremely competent in written and verbal communication.
- Fluency in Spanish is preferred but is not required.
- Must model non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
- Must have a positive attitude and be a proactive problem solver.
Other Duties
- If fluent in Spanish, the EL teacher may be called upon to interpret at meetings such as parent/teacher conferences, and gifted or special education meetings for EL students.
- Maintains professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings, state-sponsored conferences, and other professional activities.
- Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, or other appropriate administrator, that are aligned with the mission and vision of King William County Public Schools.
