DESCRIPTION

 

The candidate chosen to fill this position shall provide instruction that helps students learn subject matter and skill which will contribute to both academic achievement and development of appropriate social skills. The candidate is responsible for planning, delivering and evaluating instruction based upon specific goals and objectives established by the division and the Virginia Standards of Learning.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS       

  1. Required to hold a Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited institution.
  2. Must hold a Virginia teaching license or be eligible to receive a Virginia teaching license with required endorsements.
  3. Teaching experience (K-5) preferred.
  4. Experience in reading instruction preferred.
  5. Strong communication skills (written and oral).

 

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

 

        Immediate Supervision:     Principal

        Contract:                             10 months (200 days)

        Salary Scale:                       Teacher

        FLSA Status:                       Exempt

                          

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

 

  1. Demonstrates mastery of knowledge and skills associated with the content of reading, language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.
  2. Plans and delivers daily instruction and activities that result in student mastery and application of knowledge and skills using the school division's curriculum to assigned classes and shows evidence of preparation upon request of the supervisors.
  3. Participate in curriculum review and design.

  4. Implement a variety of effective instructional strategies consistent with lesson objectives.

  5. Assesses students' learning on an ongoing basis and modifies instruction to meet group/individual needs.

  6. Monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.

  7. Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.

  8. Creates and maintains a classroom environment that is conducive to learning.

  9. Maintains order and encourages students to set and maintain high standards of behavior in accordance with division guidelines regarding student behavior management.
  10. Develops formative and summative assessments of students' learning and uses results for further student instruction, grading, and placement.

  11. Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations.

  12. Supervises students during instructional and non-instructional time in and outside of the classroom (before school, after school, school activities, emergency drills, etc.).
  13. Refers students for alternative services as provided by the District (ESL, Reading, Special Reading).

  14. Selects and utilizes materials appropriate to the students' instructional levels.

  15. Participates in division and school-based in-service training, faculty and department meetings.

  16. Collaborates with other faculty and staff in planning and delivering instruction to students

  17. Demonstrates commitment to improving professional knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  18. Ensures compliance with existing applicable federal and state statutes and local policies, regulations, and guidelines related to public schools.

 

ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS  

 

  1. Abides by state statutes, school board policies and regulations.
  2. Attends meetings and performs duties as assigned by administrators or supervisors.
  3. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  4. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulation.
  5. Comprehensive knowledge of:  current best practices, techniques, and methodologies of  instruction; the principles of educational assessments and principles and methods of differentiated instruction; effective means of supervision and instruction as applied to the work of Instructional Assistants; the needs and requirements of working with students with special needs; the principles and methods of educational research.
  6. Ability to:  apply current best practices of education to students functioning at the elementary level; maintain an interest in the positive improvement and development of children with a variety of learning needs, maintain proper discipline; establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and students.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school. Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
