GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This individual is responsible for program building including planning, managing, and directing the program. Additionally, the candidate will review and adhere to VHSL and division policies and procedures, strive to develop the sports program by following established guidelines, and manage all aspects of the team including monitoring each athlete's academic progress, strength training and conditioning, and team practices. The individual, in collaboration with the athletic director, will work on scheduling, evaluation of student athletes, and management of the program budget. The individual will process and submit all required forms on time, monitor and maintain use of facilities and equipment, and complete an annual inventory of all issued equipment. This is a part-time position (no benefits), but if an instructional vacancy for which a candidate qualifies is available, he or she will be considered to fill the vacancy.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of applicable VHSL rules and regulations is required.
- Demonstrated success as a coach.
- Experience coaching high school distance runners preferred.
- Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
- Qualified to teach in Virginia; current license preferred.
- Current CDL with passenger endorsement highly recommended.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Instructs athletes in the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
- Organizes and directs individual and small group practice activities/exercises.
- Assesses athlete's skills, monitors players during competition and practice, and is cognizant of the importance of each student athlete's adherence to sportsmanship.
- Determines team strategy.
- Supervises athletes during practices and competition.
- Follows established injury protocols.
- Models sportsmanship and appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
- Maintains the equipment room in an orderly condition and assumes responsibility for its security.
- Distributes equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
- Participates in special activities to include parent’s night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies.
- Distributes and maintains eligibility forms, emergency data cards, and other related records.
- Models non-discriminatory actions in all activities.
- Attends staff development meetings, clinics and other professional activities to improve coaching performance.
- Develops a protocol for coach-parent communication; coach-student athlete communication.
- Develops, in collaboration with assistants, volunteers and administration, a protocol for communicating concerns and or to report incidents, i.e., student injury, unsportsmanlike conduct, parent concern.
- Performs any other related duties as assigned by the athletic director and administration.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Duties performed typically in an athletics setting (practice facility, field, etc.). Performs professional work providing instruction for the assigned sport. Work requires prolonged standing and physical movement as it relates job-specific duties. Lifting of up to 50 pounds (more than 50 pounds with assistance) may be required. Vocal communication for expressing or exchanging ideas, hearing to perceive information at a normal spoken word level and visual acuity for monitoring activities and participants is required.
